Thermophilic Digester
Overview
Thermophilic digesters operate at elevated temperatures (50-55°C) to enhance anaerobic digestion kinetics, achieving faster volatile solids destruction, improved pathogen reduction, and higher biogas production rates compared to mesophilic systems. This high-temperature process is particularly effective for sludge stabilization and Class A biosolids production.
Common Applications:
- High-rate anaerobic digestion
- Class A biosolids production (pathogen reduction)
- Plants requiring rapid sludge processing
- Combined with mesophilic digestion (two-stage)
- Pre-treatment for enhanced biogas yield
Typical Performance:
- VS reduction: 50-60%
- Retention time: 12-18 days
- Operating temperature: 50-55°C
- Biogas yield: 0.9-1.2 m³/kg VS destroyed
- Methane content: 60-65%
- Pathogen reduction: > 99.99% (Class A)
Process Description
Thermophilic anaerobic digestion uses thermophilic bacteria operating at 50-55°C to accelerate the breakdown of organic matter. The higher temperature increases microbial activity, enhances hydrolysis of complex polymers, and provides superior pathogen destruction compared to mesophilic digestion (35-38°C).
Key Mechanisms:
- Accelerated Hydrolysis: Faster breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids
- Enhanced Acetogenesis: Increased VFA production and consumption
- Rapid Methanogenesis: Higher methane generation rates
- Pathogen Inactivation: Thermal pasteurization effect
Process Variants:
- Single-Stage Thermophilic: Direct thermophilic digestion
- Temperature-Phased (TPAD): Thermophilic followed by mesophilic
- Thermal Hydrolysis + Thermophilic: Combined thermal pre-treatment
- Autothermal Thermophilic (ATD): Self-heating through oxidation
Temperature-Phased Anaerobic Digestion (TPAD):
- Stage 1: Thermophilic (50-55°C, 3-5 days) - rapid hydrolysis
- Stage 2: Mesophilic (35-38°C, 12-15 days) - stable methanogenesis

latex
Q_{feed} = Q_{inf} \cdot \rho \cdot c_p \cdot (T_{digester} - T_{feed})Heat loss through walls:

- LHV_CH₄ = 35.8 MJ/m³
- η_thermal = 0.40-0.50 for CHP
Process Control
Temperature Control
Control Strategy:
- Maintain temperature at 52-53°C (± 0.5°C)
- Use cascade control: temperature → heat exchanger valve position
- Implement feedforward control based on feed flow and temperature
Critical Considerations:
- Avoid temperature swings > 1°C/day
- Gradual acclimation when starting up (increase 1°C/day)
- Emergency cooling if > 57°C (methanogens inhibited)
VFA and Alkalinity Monitoring
VFA/Alkalinity Ratio:
latex
\text{Ratio} = \frac{\text{VFA (mg/L as HAc)}}{\text{Alkalinity (mg/L as CaCO}_3)}Control Actions:
| Ratio | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| < 0.2 | Stable | Normal operation |
| 0.2-0.3 | Caution | Increase monitoring frequency |
| 0.3-0.4 | Warning | Reduce feed rate 10-20% |
| > 0.4 | Critical | Stop feeding, add alkalinity |
Organic Loading Rate Control
- Monitor daily VS loading
- Adjust feed rate to maintain OLR at 3.5-5.0 kg VS/m³·d
- Gradual increase during startup (0.5 kg VS/m³·d per week)
