CO2 Emissions
Biological Oxidation
Carbon dioxide from heterotrophic respiration:
$$CO_2 = COD_{oxidized} \times \frac{44}{32} \times (1 - Y_H)$$
Where:
- COD_oxidized = COD_in - COD_effluent - COD_sludge (kg/d)
- 44/32 = MW ratio CO2/O2
- Y_H = Heterotrophic yield (g COD/g COD, default 0.625)
Worked Example
Given:
- Influent COD: 400 mg/L
- Effluent COD: 40 mg/L
- Sludge COD: 100 mg/L
- Flow: 20,000 m3/d
- Y_H: 0.625
Calculation:
COD_oxidized = 400 - 40 - 100 = 260 mg/L = 5,200 kg/d
CO2 = 5,200 × (44/32) × (1 - 0.625) = 2,681 kg CO2/dBiogenic vs Fossil Carbon
| Carbon Type | Source | Accounting |
|---|---|---|
| Biogenic | Municipal wastewater | Carbon neutral (excluded from totals) |
| Fossil | Industrial inputs, plastics | Counted in footprint |
Typical municipal wastewater: 100% biogenic Industrial influent: May contain 5-30% fossil carbon
CH4 Emissions
Global Warming Potential
| Timeframe | GWP |
|---|---|
| 100-year | 28 |
| 20-year | 84 |
Emission Pathways
1. Anaerobic Digester Emissions
$$CH_4^{emitted} = (1 - \eta_{collection}) \times CH_4^{produced}$$
Where:
- eta_collection = Collection efficiency (95-99%)
2. Fugitive Emissions
$$CH_4^{fugitive} = Q_{biogas} \times %CH_4 \times LR$$
Where:
- LR = Leakage rate (0.5-3% of production)
Sources:
- Pipe connections
- Valves and flanges
- Gas holder seals
- Safety relief valves
- Compressor seals
3. Dissolved Methane in Effluent
$$CH_4^{dissolved} = S_{CH4} \times Q_{effluent}$$
Typical S_CH4: 5-20 mg/L in digestate GHG impact: Often overlooked but significant
4. Flare Incomplete Combustion
$$CH_4^{flare} = Q_{biogas} \times %CH_4 \times (1 - \eta_{flare})$$
Where:
- eta_flare = Destruction efficiency (>99% for enclosed flares)
CH4 Parameters
| Parameter | Symbol | Default | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collection efficiency | eta_collection | 0.98 | 0.95-0.99 |
| Leakage rate | LR | 0.02 | 0.005-0.03 |
| Flare efficiency | eta_flare | 0.995 | 0.98-0.999 |
| Dissolved CH4 | S_CH4 | 10 | 5-25 mg/L |
N2O Emissions
Global Warming Potential
| Timeframe | GWP |
|---|---|
| 100-year | 265 |
| 20-year | 298 |
N2O is the dominant process emission from BNR facilities.
Emission Pathways
1. Nitrification Pathway (AOB-mediated)
$$N_2O^{nitrif} = EF_{nitrif} \times TKN_{nitrified}$$
Mechanism: AOB nitrifier denitrification under low DO
$$NH_4^+ \xrightarrow{AOB} NH_2OH \xrightarrow{} NO \xrightarrow{} N_2O$$
Emission factor range: 0.002 - 0.05 g N2O-N/g TKN
2. Denitrification Pathway (Heterotrophic)
$$N_2O^{denit} = EF_{denit} \times NO_3^{denitrified}$$
Mechanism: Incomplete denitrification at low COD:N
$$NO_3^- \xrightarrow{} NO_2^- \xrightarrow{} NO \xrightarrow{} N_2O \xrightarrow{} N_2$$
Emission factor range: 0.001 - 0.025 g N2O-N/g NO3-N
Factors Affecting N2O Emissions
| Factor | Effect on N2O | Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Low DO (<1 mg/L) | Increases | AOB denitrification |
| High nitrite | Increases | Incomplete denitrification |
| Low COD:N ratio | Increases | Carbon-limited denitrification |
| Transient conditions | Increases | DO fluctuations |
| High ammonia | Increases | AOB stress |
| Temperature shock | Increases | Incomplete reactions |
N2O Reduction Strategies
| Strategy | Reduction | Implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Maintain DO > 1.5 mg/L | 50-80% | DO control |
| Stable DO (no cycling) | 30-50% | ABAC control |
| Ensure COD:N > 5 | 40-60% | Carbon dosing |
| Minimize nitrite | 30-50% | Process optimization |
| Avoid overloading | 20-40% | Capacity management |
N2O Parameters
| Parameter | Symbol | Default | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrification EF | EF_nitrif | 0.01 | 0.002-0.05 |
| Denitrification EF | EF_denit | 0.005 | 0.001-0.025 |
| DO setpoint impact | - | - | Per model |
| COD:N threshold | - | 5 | 3-8 |
