Yield Prediction
Basic Yield Model
$$Q_{biogas} = VS_{destroyed} \times Y_{specific}$$
Where:
- VS_destroyed = kg VS/d
- Y_specific = 0.8-1.0 m3/kg VS
Substrate-Specific Yields
| Substrate | m3 CH4/kg VS | m3 CO2/kg VS | Total m3/kg VS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbohydrates | 0.42 | 0.42 | 0.83 |
| Proteins | 0.50 | 0.50 | 1.00 |
| Lipids | 1.01 | 0.43 | 1.44 |
| Mixed sludge | 0.50 | 0.35 | 0.85 |
Buswell Equation
Theoretical methane yield from organic composition:
$$C_nH_aO_bN_c + \left(n - \frac{a}{4} - \frac{b}{2} + \frac{3c}{4}\right)H_2O \rightarrow$$
$$\left(\frac{n}{2} + \frac{a}{8} - \frac{b}{4} - \frac{3c}{8}\right)CH_4 + \left(\frac{n}{2} - \frac{a}{8} + \frac{b}{4} + \frac{3c}{8}\right)CO_2 + cNH_3$$
Example: Glucose (C6H12O6)
n=6, a=12, b=6, c=0
CH4 yield = (6/2 + 12/8 - 6/4) = 3 mol CH4/mol glucose
At STP: 3 × 22.4 L = 67.2 L CH4/mol = 373 mL CH4/g glucose
VS Destruction Efficiency
$$\eta_{VS} = \frac{VS_{in} - VS_{out}}{VS_{in}} \times 100%$$
| Digestion Type | Temperature | SRT (d) | VS Destruction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesophilic | 35°C | 20 | 45-55% |
| Mesophilic | 35°C | 30 | 50-60% |
| Thermophilic | 55°C | 15 | 50-60% |
| Thermophilic | 55°C | 20 | 55-65% |
Temperature Effects
$$k(T) = k(35) \times \theta^{(T-35)}$$
| Temperature Range | theta (θ) |
|---|---|
| Mesophilic (30-40°C) | 1.04 |
| Thermophilic (50-60°C) | 1.08 |
Composition Model
CH4/CO2 Ratio
Depends on substrate oxidation state:
$$%CH_4 = 50 + \frac{a}{2n} - \frac{b}{n}$$
For typical wastewater sludge: 60-65% CH4
Trace Components
H2S Production
$$S_{H2S} = S_{sulfate} \times \eta_{reduction} + S_{protein} \times f_{S}$$
| Sulfate (mg/L) | H2S (ppm) | Concerns |
|---|---|---|
| <100 | <500 | Low |
| 100-300 | 500-2000 | Moderate |
| >300 | >2000 | High - treatment needed |
Siloxanes
| Source | Concentration |
|---|---|
| Municipal sludge | 1-15 mg/m3 |
| Industrial sludge | 15-50 mg/m3 |
Removal threshold for CHP: <5 mg/m3
Saturated Water Vapor
$$P_{H2O,sat} = e^{(17.27 \times T)/(237.3 + T)} \times 0.611 \text{ kPa}$$
At 35°C: ~6% of biogas is water vapor
Biogas Calculation
Mass Balance Approach
Inputs:
- Primary sludge: VS load, composition
- WAS: VS load, composition
- Co-substrates: FOG, food waste
Process:
- Calculate biodegradable fraction
- Apply VS destruction efficiency
- Apply substrate-specific yields
- Sum component contributions
Example Calculation
Given:
- Primary sludge: 2,000 kg VS/d (60% carbs, 25% proteins, 15% lipids)
- WAS: 1,000 kg VS/d (50% proteins, 40% carbs, 10% lipids)
- VS destruction: 55%
Step 1: VS destroyed
VS_destroyed = (2000 + 1000) × 0.55 = 1,650 kg/dStep 2: Biogas by substrate
Primary sludge:
Carbs: 2000 × 0.60 × 0.55 × 0.83 = 548 m³/d
Proteins: 2000 × 0.25 × 0.55 × 1.00 = 275 m³/d
Lipids: 2000 × 0.15 × 0.55 × 1.44 = 238 m³/d
Subtotal: 1,061 m³/dWAS:
Proteins: 1000 × 0.50 × 0.55 × 1.00 = 275 m³/d
Carbs: 1000 × 0.40 × 0.55 × 0.83 = 183 m³/d
Lipids: 1000 × 0.10 × 0.55 × 1.44 = 79 m³/d
Subtotal: 537 m³/dTotal: 1,598 m³/d biogas
Step 3: Composition CH4 content: ~62% → 991 m³ CH4/d
