Tips and Troubleshooting
Practical advice for the Draw page and honest notes on current limitations.
Recognition
Few or wrong detections
Recognition accuracy depends heavily on image quality and on the current (v1) detection model. If a run finds too little:
- Lower the Confidence slider (default 70%) and run again — the detector reports more candidates, and the Review grid makes it cheap to reject the bad ones.
- Use a higher-resolution image — the detector needs clear, reasonably sized symbols. A crisp export beats a phone photo of a plot.
- Expect to do some manual work on dense or non-standard sheets: the Identify view and manual hotspots exist precisely for what the model misses.
A detected symbol shows as a grey box / does not render
A recognised element only renders with its proper graphics when its symbol key exists in the stencil library. If a detection maps to a key your library does not have, assign a symbol you do have via the Review grid's Symbol cell or the Identify view's stencil search.
The "Verified" status filter never matches anything
The Review grid's status filter includes Verified, but no current workflow sets that status — today hotspots move between Pending, Identified, Rejected and Skipped. Treat the Verified filter as reserved for a future verification step.
I re-ran recognition and now have duplicates
Runs are additive. Use Clear previous run in the Recognize tab before re-running — it removes exactly the previous run's placed symbols and connections, never your own edits.
Undo after "Place all" removes one symbol at a time
Bulk placement creates one undo entry per symbol, not one for the whole batch. To take back a large bulk place, prefer Clear previous run, or hold Ctrl+Z / use the Undo split-button's multi-step list.
Deleted a hotspot by accident?
Hotspot deletion (via Delete/Backspace or the Delete actions) asks for confirmation because it cannot be undone. If you dismissed the dialog too quickly, re-draw the region with the Rectangle or Lasso tool and identify it again.
Canvas and panels
Scrolling the mouse wheel over a panel doesn't zoom the canvas
That is by design — the wheel scrolls the panel content under the cursor. Move the cursor off the panel (over the canvas) to wheel-zoom. Zooming does work over the background image.
Moving and resizing floating panels
Drag a floating panel (Recognize, Hotspots, Layers, …) by its header; resize it from the bottom-right corner. The header buttons collapse or close the panel.
I can't select or move the background image
Check the Layer panel's Background Image row: the image must be visible, unlocked and unfrozen to be selectable (the row's tooltip says "Unlock and unfreeze to select"). See Background Images.
Panning feels awkward while a drawing tool is active
Hold Space to pan temporarily with any tool, or switch to the dedicated Pan tool (H, hand cursor). The Select tool (V) gets you back to normal selection.
Opening an older drawing takes a moment the first time
A drawing saved by an older version of ErgoPlanner is upgraded to the current format automatically the first time you open it — you'll see the usual loading progress run a little longer while it happens. This is a one-time cost: once you save (or even just after it finishes loading), every later open is as fast as any other drawing. Nothing about the drawing's content changes; it is purely a storage-format upgrade.
General workflow tips
- Freeze the raster early. Once the imported image is positioned, set Freeze in its properties so tracing clicks never grab it.
- Fade the raster. Drop the background image opacity to ~40–50% so placed symbols stand out while you work.
- Identify one, apply to many. On repetitive sheets, identify a single valve/instrument and use Apply to N similar to propagate — it is the fastest route through a big P&ID.
- Sort the Review grid by Confidence. Accept the high-confidence rows in bulk, then spend your attention on the tail.
- Save your recognised sheet as a template. If the same arrangement (e.g. a sewage pumping station) recurs across projects, use Save as Template in the recognition success box and reuse it from the template library.
- Keep autosave on. The toggle sits next to Save in the menu bar; the header pill shows the save state.
