Algae (photosynthesis) Bacteria (respiration)
^ |
| v
Organics → CO2 + H2O + NH3Photosynthetic Oxygen Production
$$P_{O2} = I \times A \times \eta_{photo} \times f_{algae}$$
Where:
- P_O2 = oxygen production rate (kg O2/d)
- I = solar radiation (MJ/m2/d)
- A = pond surface area (m2)
- eta_photo = photosynthetic efficiency (typically 3-5%)
- f_algae = conversion factor (0.3 kg O2/MJ at 5% efficiency)
Oxygen Balance
$$\frac{dDO}{dt} = P_{O2} - R_{bacteria} - R_{algae,night} + K_{La}(DO_{sat} - DO)$$
Where:
- R_bacteria = bacterial respiration rate
- R_algae,night = algal dark respiration
- K_La = reaeration coefficient
Diurnal DO Variation

|---|---|---|
| Dawn (6am) | Minimum | Night respiration |
| Midday | Maximum | Peak photosynthesis |
| Dusk (6pm) | Declining | Reducing light |
| Night | Near zero | Dark respiration |
Kinetic Models
First-Order BOD Removal
For plug-flow ponds:
$$\frac{S_e}{S_0} = \exp(-k \times t)$$
For complete-mix ponds:
$$\frac{S_e}{S_0} = \frac{1}{1 + k \times t}$$
Where:
- k = first-order rate constant (1/d)
- t = hydraulic retention time (d)
Temperature Correction
$$k_T = k_{20} \times \theta^{(T-20)}$$
Where theta:
- Facultative: 1.05-1.09
- Anaerobic: 1.03-1.06
Mara Design Equation (Facultative)
$$A = \frac{Q \times L_i}{\lambda_s}$$
Where:
- A = pond area (ha)
- Q = flow (m3/d)
- L_i = influent BOD (mg/L)
- lambda_s = surface loading (kg BOD/ha/d)
Marais-Shaw Model (Pathogen Removal)
$$\frac{N_e}{N_0} = \frac{1}{(1 + k_b \times t)^n}$$
Where:
- N = coliform count
- k_b = bacterial die-off rate (1/d)
- n = number of ponds in series
Design Equations

Given
- Population: 5,000 PE
- Flow: 800 m3/d (160 L/PE/d)
- Influent: BOD 300 mg/L, FC 10^8/100mL
- Climate: Subtropical, T_min = 18 deg C
- Target: BOD <30 mg/L, FC <1000/100mL
- Available land: 8 ha
Design
Step 1: BOD Load $$L_0 = 800 \times 0.3 = 240 \text{ kg BOD/d}$$
Step 2: Anaerobic Pond Sizing At T = 18 deg C, use volumetric loading = 150 g BOD/m3/d
Volume required: $$V_{an} = \frac{240,000}{150} = 1,600 \text{ m}^3$$
At depth 3.5m: $$A_{an} = 1,600/3.5 = 457 \text{ m}^2$$
HRT = 1,600/800 = 2 days
BOD removal = 50%, effluent BOD = 150 mg/L
Step 3: Facultative Pond Sizing BOD load to facultative = 800 x 0.15 = 120 kg BOD/d
At 18 deg C, surface loading = 180 kg BOD/ha/d
$$A_f = \frac{120}{180} = 0.67 \text{ ha} = 6,700 \text{ m}^2$$
At depth 1.5m: $$V_f = 6,700 \times 1.5 = 10,050 \text{ m}^3$$
HRT = 10,050/800 = 12.6 days
BOD removal = 75%, effluent BOD = 38 mg/L (needs maturation)
Step 4: Maturation Pond Sizing (for pathogen removal) Required FC removal: 10^8 to 10^3 = 5 log reduction
Using Marais-Shaw with k_b = 2.0/d at 18 deg C:
For n ponds in series: $$\ln\frac{10^8}{10^3} = n \times \ln(1 + k_b \times t)$$ $$11.5 = n \times \ln(1 + 2.0 \times t)$$
With t = 4 days per pond: $$11.5 = n \times \ln(9) = n \times 2.2$$ $$n = 5.2$$
Use 3 maturation ponds with longer HRT (6 days each): $$11.5 = 3 \times \ln(1 + 2.0 \times 6) = 3 \times 2.56 = 7.7$$
Not quite sufficient - use 4 ponds or 7 days each.
Using 4 ponds at 5 days each: $$\text{Removal} = (1 + 2 \times 5)^4 = 11^4 = 14,641$$
Log removal = 4.2, acceptable with safety factor.
Each maturation pond: $$V_m = 800 \times 5 = 4,000 \text{ m}^3$$ $$A_m = 4,000/1.2 = 3,333 \text{ m}^2$$
Step 5: Total Area
- Anaerobic: 460 m2 = 0.05 ha
- Facultative: 6,700 m2 = 0.67 ha
- Maturation: 4 x 3,333 = 13,332 m2 = 1.33 ha
- Embankments, roads (30%): 0.62 ha
Total = 2.67 ha < 8 ha available
Step 6: Summary
| Component | Area (m2) | Depth (m) | HRT (d) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anaerobic | 460 | 3.5 | 2 |
| Facultative | 6,700 | 1.5 | 12.6 |
| Maturation (4x) | 13,332 | 1.2 | 20 |
| Total | 20,492 | - | 34.6 |
Effluent quality:
- BOD: <25 mg/L
- FC: <1,000/100mL
Operational Considerations
Seasonal Variations
| Season | Performance Issue | Management |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Algae blooms | Harvest, depth control |
| Winter | Reduced treatment | Reduce loading if possible |
| Wet season | Short-circuiting | Baffles, flow control |
| Dry season | Evaporation losses | Water balance |
Algae Control
Excessive algae can cause:
- High effluent TSS
- Elevated pH (>9)
- Oxygen supersaturation (gas disease in fish)
Control measures:
- Depth variation (2-2.5 m reduces algae)
- Effluent withdrawal from depth
- Rock filters
- Harvesting (rare)
Sludge Management
| Pond Type | Sludge Accumulation | Desludging Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Anaerobic | 0.04-0.08 m3/capita/yr | 5-10 years |
| Facultative | 0.02-0.04 m3/capita/yr | 10-20 years |
| Maturation | Minimal | Rarely needed |
Mosquito Control
- Maintain adequate depth (>0.6 m at edges)
- Control vegetation
- Stock with mosquitofish (Gambusia)
- Maintain flow to prevent stagnation
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Odors | Overloading | Reduce loading, add anaerobic |
| Anaerobic conditions | Increase depth mixing | |
| Sulfate reduction | Dilution, lime addition | |
| Green effluent | Algae carry-over | Withdraw from depth, rock filter |
| Short-circuiting | Add baffles | |
| Poor BOD removal | Cold temperature | Reduce loading seasonally |
| Short HRT | Check for short-circuiting | |
| Toxic inputs | Source control | |
| High effluent TSS | Algae | Depth withdrawal, maturation |
| Wind-induced mixing | Baffles, orientation | |
| Purple/pink color | Sulfur bacteria | Reduce sulfate, loading |
| Floating sludge | Anaerobic gas lift | Desludge, reduce loading |
| Weed growth | Shallow margins | Deepen edges, remove weeds |
