Using the Project Carbon Tab
The actual, shipped carbon-footprint UI: a Carbon tab on the project detail page with a real server calculation, a live what-if model, a net-zero pathway planner and compliance report exports.
The rest of this section (GHG Emissions, Scope 1/2/3, Biogas Production, Energy Recovery, Reporting) is engineering-methodology reference material — emission factors, formulas and benchmarks. This page is the one that describes the actual on-screen tab: where it is, what each button does, and what it does not do yet.
Where it is
Open a project and go to its Carbon tab: /admin/projects/{projectId}?tab=carbon. Like every tab on that page, the URL is shareable — a link straight to the Carbon tab opens on it.
The tab needs the engineering calculations entitlement to run the server calculation. Without it, the Calculate button stays visible but disabled, with a tooltip explaining the entitlement; the other three views below still work because they only need a report that already exists.
The four views
- GHG scopes — click Calculate to run the server-side Scope 1/2/3 calculation. Every emission line is shown with its activity quantity, unit, the emission factor applied, and the resulting kgCO₂e/day, so any number can be traced back to what produced it. The data source (UK BEIS 2024 by default) is shown next to the total.
- Footprint model — an editable what-if model (treated flow, electricity, biogas production, nitrogen removed, grid region, treatment technology) that starts from the same numbers the server just calculated, then lets you explore changes without re-running the server calculation. Shows emissions by source, the scope split, carbon intensity per m³, and an industry-benchmark comparison.
- Net zero pathway — pick mitigation measures from a library and see the waterfall from your baseline to residual emissions, along with capital cost, annual savings, payback and what would need to be offset.
- Compliance report — generates a GHG Protocol / ISO 14064-1 / CDP-shaped report from the current model, with its source data and factors, exportable as Markdown or JSON.
Report history
Calculating again does not overwrite the previous report — each calculation is kept, and the project retains its 20 most recent. The GHG scopes view always shows the newest one.
Limits
- Calculate requires the engineering-calculations entitlement; the rest of the tab does not.
- A project that has never been calculated shows nothing in GHG scopes until Calculate is run at least once.
- The what-if model, pathway and compliance report are client-side exploration on top of the last server report — they do not themselves get saved as a new server report; only Calculate does that.
